Qu'il conçoive une maison sans murs ou des espaces d'exposition faits de conteneurs de transport, Shigeru Ban remet sans cesse en question les règles de l'architecture et nos attentes à son égard. À l'époque des « starchitectes », sa pratique reste marquée par un altruisme sans relâche. Au cours de sa brillante carrière, ses projets à la fois inventifs et élégants ont aussi bien porté sur des commandes privées que des constructions conçues pour répondre à des situations d'urgences humanitaires lors de catastrophes naturelles ou provoquées par l'homme, partout dans le monde, de Kobe à la Nouvelle-Orléans. Selon le jury du prix Pritzker - qui lui a été décerné en 2014 -, l'architecte manifeste « une curiosité et un engagement absolus, un esprit d'innovation sans limite, un regard infaillible et une sensibilité aiguë ».

Cette monographie actualisée, élaborée avec Shigeru Ban en personne, rassemble toutes ses réalisations, dont ses projets les plus récents, comme le Pavillon de carton de Madrid, le Musée d'art d'Aspen et la Cathédrale de carton pour Christchurch.

From a house without walls to exhibition spaces in shipping containers, Shigeru Ban has constantly challenged architectural rule and expectation. In the age of the « starchitect, » he has also demonstrated an unremitting altruism in his practice : Over the course of his esteemed career, his inventive, elegant designs have been applied as much to private commissions as to humanitarian relief work at the sites of natural and man-made disasters around the world, from Kobe to New Orleans. For the Pritzker Prize jury, which chose Ban as its 2014 winner, the architect manifests « total curiosity and commitment ; endless innovation ; an infallible eye ; an acute sensibility. »

This updated monograph, compiled with the architect's collaboration, brings together every one of Ban's built works, including such recent projects as the Madrid Paper Pavilion, the Aspen Art Museum, and the Cardboard Cathedral in Christchurch.
