Description
If you had told me when I was a young boy growing up in Brooklyn, New York that oneday my pencil drawings would end up in books, museums, private collections, and in apresidential library, I would've just kept on drawing- too focused on my next piece tobelieve it.From the time I could first hold a pencil,I was drawing, trying to capture the worldaround me with nothing more than graphite on paper.I've always been fascinated by the detail a pencil could capture. There's somethingpure about it. No color to distract, just light and shadow, line and texture, whether I'mdrawing firemen's coats,a stack of books,or a city scene,I try to breathe life into thesubject through the most subtle shifts of tone. People often mistake my work forphotography and while that's flattering, it's never been my aim. My goal has alwaysbeen to show what can be done with a pencil- when you take your time, and let thedrawing unfold. This book is a collection of drawings that span many years, many hours, and manymemories. Some took weeks, others months. Each one tells a story- not just of theobject or the scene, but of where I was in my life at the time.Sharing this work means sharing a piece of myself. It means revisiting the hours I spenthunched over the drawing board. It means remembering why I fell in love with drawingin the first place. In addition to drawing, one of the greatest joys of my life has been teaching. AtPencilworks Studio, which I opened 25 years ago with my wife Karen,I've had theprivilege of working with students of all ages. Watching someone go from hesitation toconfidence, from sketch to finished piece, has been incredibly rewarding.I've always believed that drawing isn't about talent. It's about learning to see, andtrusting your experience. As you turn these pages, I hope you'll see more than just pencil on paper. I hope you'llsee a lifetime of dedication to an art form I love, and the joy I've found in both creatingand sharing that love with others. Whether you're an artist,an admirer, or someonepicking up a pencil for the first time-I hope you'll see enjoy my drawings.
