Description
The 13 chapters with 31 contributions of the book contain lots of information on the everyday life and the economy of the earliest Stone Age farmers. In a readily intelligible way, many "substantial" archaeological topics are dealt with such as the pottery, house building as well as death and burial, but there are also texts on the division of labour, the social mutual co-operation, ancestor-worship, and Stone Age music. Stone Age cooking is described in a very precise way. The way of the cultivated cereals from the field to the finished bread is explained, as is cooking at a hearth with "Linear Pottery" ingredients. An absolute novelty is a chapter on "Clothes make the man - head finery, hats, and jewellery do, too", in which the repeatedly presented "Stone Age fashion" is described and illustrated in detail for the first time. Both texts and pictures vividly combine scientific results from excavations with data from archaeological experiments and reconstructions. The illustrations mainly are colour photographs taken during the "Hesse Day" at Heppenheim and make alive the results of academic research to a degree surpassing all previous attempts in this field.
