Description
The two moods Laughter and Anger are the main themes chosen by Canadian trans-lator Tom Priestly for his selection of political and satirical poems by Janko Messner. He thereby identifies the lyrical means of expression that characterize the poet: his anger, his rage in the face of global calamities, of wars, the exploitation of nature, and modern slavery; and his Homeric mockery of the world which once promised so much improvement, from Central Europe to Central America, to which he dedicated the cycle of poems in his 1998 book Nicaragua mein geliebtes/Nikaragva moja ljubljena [Nicaragua my Beloved] that was so admired by Erich Fried and Ernesto Cardenal. If the chief achievement of Messner's creative work is prose - as the book K?rntner Heimatbuch [Carinthian Home Book](Kitab 1980) shows - then his political and love poems, the latter continuing the tradition of Heinrich Heine, are this Carinthian Slovenian's brilliant contribution to European poetry of the turn of the century. Together with his Cigave je ta zemlja naSa? [Whose Is This Our Land?] (Norea 2002), B?sne/Pesmi/Poems (Norea 1998) and Ausgew?hlten Werken [Collected Works] (Drava 2009-11), the present poetry selection in English and German is another tile in the mosaic portraying Janko Messner the poet.
