Michael Harrison è noto per i suoi scherzi. Li ha fatti a tutti i suoi amici, specialmente ai quattro più cari. Scherzi spesso divertenti, sì, ma altrettanto spesso crudeli. Forse troppo. Mai però quanto quello che tocca a lui. Dopo la sua festa di addio al celibato e una colossale sbronza, Michael si risveglia nel buio più completo in un luogo sconosciuto. Sconosciuto e... stretto. Lo scherzo è la vendetta dei suoi quattro amici, e dovrebbe durare poco, giusto il tempo di spaventare Michael a dovere. Quando però i suoi amici rimangono coinvolti in un incidente d'auto, il gioco si trasforma in un incubo. Perché in teoria nessuno sa dove lui sia sepolto e nessuno può salvarlo... È a questo punto che il detective Roy Grace viene contattato dalla fidanzata di Michael. Una donna bellissima e, come da copione, distrutta dall'angoscia. Manca pochissimo al matrimonio e Grace, a sua volta tormentato dai propri dolorosi fantasmi, scopre che l'unica persona che dovrebbe sapere qualcosa di Michael tace.
