Bert Wheeler and Robert Woolsey were solo performers in vaudeville and on Broadway when Florenz Ziegfeld teamed them up for his stage musical Rio Rita. When that show was made into a film in 1929, Wheeler and Woolsey were cast in the movie and became such a hit, they did more films together and eventually became a popular movie comedy team.
