Skaravan

0 - Default Title
Description
Evolving from the Jazz Warriors (the foundation for many leading UK jazz players, including Courtney Pine) Gary Crosby has side-stepped into the infectious world of ska, gathering together some of the best players (the Skatalites' Rico, Cymande's Michael Rose) to build an album of originals and adapted classics. Cutting a path amongst the more accessible jazz/ska carnival selection--"Barbados" and "Don Cosmic"--the band also indulge themselves in some roots relief with the Rico penned "Ramblin'" and "Africa", two horn heavy dub outs backed by the ska rhythm. Skaravan does slip into tweeness at points--such as "Peanut Vendor", with its bossa twinge--but what cannot be denied is the crisp live musicianshi, and potent energy of the music that exists as a result of this octet's formidable experience. --Found Sounds
