Transforming Building Materials for Sustainable Development

0 - Default Title
Description
The book "Impact of Prevailing Building Material Sector Transformation in Economic Development: A Case Study of Clay Fired Bricks in Rwanda" examined how Rwanda's brick sector supports the National Strategy for Transformation (NST1) under its economic pillar. Implemented through the PROECCO programme by SKAT Consulting Rwanda, the initiative promoted climate¿responsive building materials and off¿farm employment. Between 2017-2021, brick production jobs grew exponentially, driven by government adoption of modern bricks with Rowlock bond technology in Integrated Development Program model villages. PROECCO's model also addressed densification and unplanned settlement transformation, engaging citizens inclusively. Skills training strengthened the supply chain, improved service providers' incomes, and aligned with Rwanda's goal of a knowledge¿led economy. The research further assessed certification status of clay building materials, identifying gaps and standards to be developed. Overall, PROECCO's implementation aligns with NST1 objectives, advancing sustainable affordable housing, environmental protection, settlement transformation, and supply chain development.
