En juin 2012, j'achète à un brocanteur sur Internet un lot de 250 photographies d'une famille dont je ne sais rien. Les photos m'arrivent dans une grosse enveloppe blanche quelques jours plus tard. Dans l'enveloppe il y a des gens, à la banalité familière, bouleversante. Je décide de les inventer puis de partir à leur recherche. Un soir, je montre l'enveloppe à Alex.
