Er trug die fünf Wundmale Christi. Durch seine Fürbitten bewirkte er zahllose Wunder, es kam zu spontanen Heilungen und vielen »unerklärlichen« Vorkommnissen. Als Pater Pio am 23. September 1968 starb, hinterließ er das Versprechen, dass er auch aus der jenseitigen Welt zum Wohle der Menschheit weiterwirken wolle. Pater Pio wurde im Juni 2002 heilig gesprochen.
