It can be nothing less than admirable that Sarah Winnemucca-(originally known as Thocmentony,translated as 'Shell Flower')a woman of the Northern Paiute native American tribe -born in 1844 near Humbolt Lake, Nevada-became a published author. In fact, her book is acknowledged as 'the first known ethno-historical book written by an American Indian woman'.The daughter of a chief, her family temporarily moved from their traditional homelands when the Paiute War of 1860 broke out.Sarah received a Catholic School education which enabled her to embark on a career working for the betterment of her people.In 1871 she joined the Bureau of Indian Affairs and was employed by General Howard during the Bannock War of 1878.Her highly significant book, published in 1883 combines her memoirs with an overview of the initial 40 years of her tribe's contact with the burgeoning American nation. Saunder's work in this volume provides context to the 1878 conflict, whilst Peabody's short work provides a third person perspective of Sarah Winnemucca's outstanding achievements.
