Description
(aus dem Vorwort Leo Hirschs)***************Following Adolf von Wrede's travels in the Wadi Hadramut in the mid-19th century, the Arabian Peninsula's second-largest desert valley became a sought-after destination for European explorers, despite only being accessible at great risk. After Heinrich von Maltzahn published Wrede's description of his journey in 1873 interest in this region grew still further. When Leo Hirsch set off to go there in November 1892 he wanted to test the reliablilty of Wrede's study, which had been called into question. As a result, Hirsch's depiction of the unique landscape of Hadramut and the towns of Schibam, Saiun and Terim, still architecturally fascinating today, are captivating in their exactness and objectivity.
"If I have succeeded in lifting a little the veil with which religious fanaticism and suspicious mistrust have so long covered this region, and if I am able to offer the first authentic description of Hadramut and its chief towns, hitherto considered inaccessible, the achievement of this success required not least endless patience and dogged persistence, qualities necessary indeed for any explorer, but which were here stretched to their limits." (From Leo Hirsch's Introduction)
