Per curare il marito, Nora in passato si è indebitata con un certo Krogstad. Per anni ha lavorato per pagare il debito, senza riuscire a liberarsene. Krogstad, che lavora nella banca di cui il marito di Nora è direttore, ricatta la donna perché gli ottenga una promozione.
