Description
This CD is a unique combination of piano works by Karl Amadeus Hartmann (1905-63) and his only pupil, Karl Heinz Wahren (b. 1933). The two works from Hartmann are both very early: the Kleine Suite (1924-26) from his student days under Joseph Haas and the Sonatine from 1931, when Hermann Scherchen was a great influence. The brief, simple Suite is in four sections, slow-fast-slow, which have a contrapuntal feel throughout, with left and right hands showing considerable independence. Wahren's bright, solidly tonal music has a French insouciance about it. Paradiesvogel is concrete poetry, born of the mechanical-virtuoso possibilities of piano playing, and, at the same time, an experiment with the song in its traditional A-B-A form.
