Le imposte sbatacchiavano e si sentiva continuamente lo schianto dei vasi di fiori o di altri oggetti che cadevano sulla strada o sulle automobili fittamente parcheggiate". La bora soffia su Trieste ed è come una metafora delle minacce che gravano sul commissario capo Proteo Laurenti. La moglie lo ha appena lasciato, il figlio frequenta una bettola di naziskin e una bomba è esplosa alle porte della città massacrando un'intera famiglia slovena. Trieste è una terra di confine ed è con ogni tipo di confine, geografico, etnico e morale, che Laurenti se la deve vedere.
