1. Why did you choose this topic?An intense and lifelong sonic curiosity pushed and pulled me toward this topic. Street music, birdsongs, the rumbling of a car, voices speaking in a foreign language: How come certain sounds seem to be so pleasant to some, so provoking to others? Is someone in control, or is it all but collateral noise? This book is my attempt at sharing the answers I found to those questions.2. What new perspectives does your book offer?»Resonant Fabrics« breaks with the traditional, reductionist approaches in urban research and planning. Instead, this book shifts its perspective towards a city that is not a determinate object but an oscillating, open realm that responds to and is inseparable from the cultures and sensibilities of the urban community.3. What makes your topic relevant for current research debates?The social sciences, for so long, deliberately overheard the outcries, the roars, the uncanny silences all around us – and thereby also turned deaf towards the acoustic richness of the more-than-human world, with often disastrous consequences. By developing a more acute sonic sensibility, the social sciences could gain new, empowering, and compassionate understandings of urban environments and the life forms within. `Resonant Fabrics' is my heartfelt contribution to this task.4. Choose one person you would like to discuss your book with!I would love to talk with Salome Voegelin about sound and listening. It was through reading her thoughts and ideas that quite literally my hearing changed. Just her words in a book, yes, but suddenly those words made me sense the tiniest sonic nuances – grainy, sparkling sounds where before was only noise.5.
