Routledge Companion to American Urbanism (Routledge International Handbooks)
0 - Default Title
Description
This Companion provides a 'state of the art' of scholarship on American urbanism. It presents work by leading scholars on a wide range of topics germane to the study of U.S. cities in a transnational and globalizing context. This is a volume that takes the object of study (the American city), rather than the disciplinary lens (history or sociology, for example) as the basic point of departure. In its conceptual breadth and empirical rigor, the volume models the form and content of interdisciplinary inquiry. It is at once a meditation on what we know about the American city and at the same time how we know it. As such, the Companion constitutes a new point of departure for advancing cross-disciplinary conversations, critical understandings, and future lines of research. An introduction establishes the rationale, goals, and organization of the Companion, followed by eight broadly thematic sections. Section 1 considers the values, ideologies, and visions that have shaped American cities over the past two centuries. Section 2 examines the mutually constitutive relations of scale and form in the production of American urbanism. Section 3 surveys the systems and patterns that both frame and animate cities, such as governance, economies, and networked technologies. Section 4 looks at American cities as ever-shifting bundles of public and private goods, and the ways in which people struggle over their definition and use. Section 5 examines the construction of urban imaginaries, locating representations of American cities in a wide variety of media. Section 6 focuses on specific urban forms and spaces, such as shopping malls and skyscrapers, that arise at the intersection of economic demand, social relations, and aesthetic value. Section 7 surveys a range of granular urban practices that shape American cities, from real estate and redevelopment to tourism and historic preservation.
