As the title suggests, Legend of the Incredible Flutist (70k) is the story of a journey that begins and ends with music: an American dance company on tour in Europe gets caught up in the outbreak of WWII. When a German officer halts their performance of "The Incredible Flutist" ballet in a French town, they have to flee to Spain through the Pyrenees. Buried in an avalanche, the principal dancer is rescued by a Basque shepherd. After the war, the shepherd persuades a local filmmaker to make a documentary about the incredible escape of the flutist.
Inspired by the efforts of the Resistance to help evaders create new identities for themselves, the documentary filmmaker tries his own hand at fiction, turning the true story into the tale of a Scottish airman who is shot down in Northern France. Making his way through the Pyrenees, the protagonist is aided by several people to escape to Spain, including a young woman who saves his life.Years later, after the death of his wife, the airman retraces his journey to thank the people who risked their lives for him. Along the way, he begins to understand that he is following in the steps of the troubadours. These intertwined stories finally unfold in film, using locally sourced talent-and the only way the filmmaker could afford to make his movie. The narrative comes full circle, back to the music from "The Incredible Flutist" that affected so many lives.
