He served as pastor of the First Baptist Church in Oklahoma City for nearly twenty-five years and wrote or edited 147 books and Bible commentaries. Herschel Hobbs views his own life as one long series of personal encounters with God--beginning with the tragic death of his father when Hobbs was two years old and continuing through more than sixty years of pastoral service and his election as president of the largest Protestant denomination in America. Hobbs’s Biblicism, his sound Christology, his emphasis on salvation by grace through faith, and his unapologetic belief in Christ’s sufficient and substitutionary death, bodily resurrection and imminent return, coupled with his belief in the eternal state and the final judgment, provided a healthy framework for his thinking and teaching and for Southern Baptist theology.
