George and Florence Daynor arrived in Vineland, New Jersey during the Depression. They bought an old junkyard on swampland. With the pieces of junk and the clay from the creek on the property, they built a house with car parts and assorted trash. The Palace of Depression, as it became known, opened to the public in 1932. Nearly a quarter million tourists came from around the world to see this strange house.
