The Beggar

0 - Default Title
Description
Martin Griffiths’ dramatic voice with its signature natural vibrato defined Beggars Opera’s early ’70s albums “Act One”, “Waters of Change” and “Pathfinder”. His solo album “The Beggar” now shows him as a versatile singer and songwriter beyond his progressive rock roots. The songs he wrote back in the ’70s carry the spirit of that era: sparkling creativity, sheer fun to experiment and profound depth.
With “The Beggar”, Martin Griffiths tells a story – through powerful rock songs, catchy pop songs and Latin rhythms, ballads and love songs – with hints of his admiration for the Eagles, the Beatles and Sinatra. His unmistakable voice can still sweep you off your feet like a force of nature or pull you close with breathtaking intimacy – captured with sensitivity by Maxi Sator, who also contributes her heartfelt harmonies.
The music – professionally arranged and performed by Alias Eye, the band around Martin’s son Philip Griffiths and winners of the SPH Music Masters 2019 – comes alive thanks to the outstanding musicians Vytas Lemke (keyboards, guitars, accordion), Tissi Richter (guitars), Frank Fischer (bass) and Ludwig Benedek (drums, percussion). And Philip himself enriches Martin’s songs skilfully with his characteristic, soft harmonies. As a little treat, the album also includes some rare Revox recordings from the ’70s – Martin’s voice in its purest form, accompanied only by his guitar.
The Beggar is a labour of love and unmistakably Martin Griffiths – authentic, moving and 100% emotion. For all who have always cherished his voice and want to experience his own songs – and for those discovering him for the first time, it is an invitation to be touched by a voice that bridges time and genres.
