The Seed Apple

The Seed Apple

0 - Default Title
Description
In The Seed Apple, Mendel travels to the California desert and engages with a family of Jewish Native Americans who trace their origins to pre-Hispanic Yucatan. Focusing on the Binyans, a family of builders, was a natural extension of the concept of Solomon's sailors having a cross-cultural impact on the Mayans. It's also a retelling of the Exodus story. The Cold War setting supported the construction of the latest tower on their Sacred Mountain, which is designed to communicate globally with America's nuclear submarine fleet. This provided an opportunity to express the inter-generational tensions that were an intrinsic element of that period. An additional theme is the emergence of strong women who break out of their traditional roles.
