Description

Native American Indian Singer/Songwriter Kym Gouchie is originally from the Lheidli T'enneh Nation in BC, Canada, and a proud mix of Carrier, Cree and Shuswap with a dash of European descent.

She combines elements of traditional, folk, pop and country to create a unique voice. Raised amongst musicians, it wasn’t until dealing with personal tragedy that she was able to find her voice on her own journey, which is realized with her debut album .

Raising a family, single parenting and working left her very little time to follow her own voice, but in 2006, Kym met well-known First-Nations singer/songwriter Sandy Scofield, who invited her to join her group Iskwew on tour and perform. Terrified but thrilled, Kym started her journey as a full-fledged musician and in 2008 received a grant from Canada Council to research and write songs with her Carrier grandmother, whom she holds dear. .

Unfortunately, Kym experienced a devastating tragedy that shook her entire being. It was through song that she was able to deal with the tragedy and the music started to flow, faster and faster, seemingly all at once. Kym emerged from the tragedy with a new voice.

Through song, she can also help others find their voice. Kym met with survivors of residential school, and their stories of abuse and broken spirit to how they overcame to be their own success were heartbreaking yet inspiring.

As Kym readies for her debut album, she reflects on the journey it’s taken for her to find her voice.
