"Una storia comune" è il primo romanzo che Goncarov scrive, nel 1847, dove già si delineano i temi dell'indolenza rinunciataria e della fatalità che torneranno nel suo più famoso Oblomov. È la storia del giovane aristocratico Aleksandr Aduev che dalle sue terre (ricordate poi come idilliaco paradiso rurale) si trasferisce a San Pietroburgo, dove sogna l'amore pieno e romantico, che viene amaramente smentito, anche nel confronto con il pragmatismo disilluso dello zio Pjotr che lo ospita. Il racconto, tutto impalpabilmente comico, si capovolge a sorpresa nella parte finale. Di questo romanzo il grande Lev Tolstoj dice: 'Una delizia, leggetelo tutti... con esso si impara a vivere'.
