Una serie di racconti brevi dedicati a sentimenti umani "essenziali" che, disposti in ordine alfabetico, compongono una sorta di dizionario. I primi racconti, da "amore" a "famiglia", uscirono sul "Corriere della sera" fra il 1971 e il 1972. Una seconda serie fu pubblicata fra il 1973 e il 1980 e nel 1984 i due Sillabari furono riuniti in un unico volume. Quei racconti controcorrente, frutto di una fulminante riduzione agli elementi primi della realtà, appaiono nitidi, assoluti, chiusi in una nervosa e brusca perfezione, capaci di evocare un intero mondo perduto. Come ha scritto Cesare Garboli, Parise "distilla la pietra filosofale del raccontare. Ma non racconta, fa qualcosa di più. Invoglia a pensare che il mondo sia raccontabile".
