Description
Based on Victor Hugo's controversial play Le roi s'amuse, Giuseppe Verdi's opera "Rigoletto" tells the tragic story of a deformed, embittered court jester who delights in helping to arrange female prey for his sex-crazed master, the Duke. However, the father of one of his victims places a curse on him and Rigoletto soon feels its full force when he discovers that the Duke's most recent victim is his own daughter, Gilda, whom he had carefully hidden and protected. When finally the jester hires an assassin to kill the Duke, his plan for revenge backfires in a catastrophic fashion. The plot with its portrayal of aristocratic corruption was not popular with the authorities in Venice, and obstacles were put in the way of the first performance, however Rigoletto was finally premiered at "La Fenice" on March 11th 1851. Although not an instant success, it soon found popularity with Venetian audiences and became Verdi's first major operatic hit.
