This release presents the first three studio albums from the creator of the bossa nova genre, Brazilian singer-songwriter-guitarist João Gilberto. His 1959 debut LP, "Chega de Saudade," is often credited as the first bossa nova album. His second album "O Amor, o Sarriso e a Flor" (The Love, the Smile and the Flower), was released in 1960. Richard S. Ginell, writing in AllMusic, says of "O Amor": "This vitally important record introduced João Gilberto, Antonio Carlos Jobim and thus, bossa nova to the United States in 1961, a year before Stan Getz scored a hit with "Desafinado...." Gilberto's third album, the self-titled "João Gilberto," was released a year later.
