Malaria is a chronic infectious disease caused by single-celled microorganisms belonging to the Plasmodium group. It can be caused by five species of Plasmodium, namely, P. falciparum, P. vivax, P. malariae, P. ovale, and P. knowlesi. However, it is most commonly caused by P. falciparum.
