Il 25 febbraio 1956, davanti a delegati del XX Congresso del Pcus e a reduci della prigionia, si svolse un singolare processo a Stalin, morto ormai da tre anni, in cui Kruscev assunse i ruoli di pubblico ministero, testimone d'accusa e giudice. Ne risultò il famoso Rapporto Kruscev, in cui venivano elencati tutti i crimini di Stalin e che fu utilizzato come fonte di riferimento dalla storiografia dominante durante la Guerra Fredda. Ruggero Giacomini, avvalendosi delle nuove documentazioni emerse dagli archivi sovietici, passa in rassegna in modo analitico tutti i capi d'accusa e, senza negare gli orrori e gli errori dell'epoca staliniana, dimostra come quel particolare processo fu per Kruscev un modo per rafforzare la propria autorità.
