Gay'Wu

Gay'Wu

Aboriginal arts and knowledge

This second volume in the Gay'Wu series examines the Wamulu ground paintings that were produced in the Central Desert of Australia between 2002 and 2005. Wamulu is a yellow desert flower that is used as primary material for ground paintings or ground mosaics. Four senior artists, Ted Egan Jangala, Dinny Nolan Tjampitjinpa, Johnny Possum Japaljarri and Albie Morris Jampijinpa, worked side by side on this body of work. Ground paintings, an ancient form of art that likely goes back many thousands of years, are typically made for ceremonial purposes and destroyed once the ceremony is completed. Like their ritual counterparts, these contemporary paintings are the result of a communal performance or happening. While the iconography belongs to traditional idioms, the wamulu boards are contemporary works of art. As a public form of art, they bridge traditional and contemporary art practices.
