Many accounts of life in pre-war Glasgow tell of dole queues, handouts and the hardships of the unemployed, but the approach of war in the second half of the decade began to generate full employment, and little of that was apparent to the author. George lived in central Govan until 1936. He describes in detail the lively environment of the neighbourhood. We learn of the domestic detail of family life and the prevailing working conditions in the shipyards close by; the shipping movements on the Clyde; contemporary paediatric treatments; and of the games played by children in the street. This is a valuable contribution to the understanding of the social history of Glasgow which should appeal both to the general reader and to the serious student.
