Aesthetics and Ideology

0 - Default Title
Description
Over the years there has been a radical transformation in the dominant conceptions of what constitutes the 'literary.' A shift in emphasis from interpretation to theory and from questions about what texts might 'mean' and how they are organized to questions about they systems that contain them and their ideological implications has contributed to this change. These essays by leading scholars rethink the aesthetic, rewrite its history, and re-imagine the place of the 'formal' in criticism, even in ideological criticism. 'Aesthetics and Ideology' reworks discourses of race, gender, class, and politics to show how the 'aesthetic' continues to be a crucial category of human value as it opens itself to new possibilities of integration with the 'ideological.'
