George Jones has run the gamut of success and squander during his long career, to such an extent he was famously - or notoriously - dubbed 'No Show Jones' for many years. Despite himself he cut a substantial catalogue of memorable recordings, often better when drunk than when sober, and through a determined effort to straighten up and fly right in his later years he survives to this day as one of the greatly honoured elder statesmen of country music. This 40 track double CD traces the best part of his career in music and the accompanying 16-page booklet, from the untypical rocker "White Lightning" in 1958 (credited on original release to Thumper Jones) through all of his important recordings of the 1960s. Many of these tracks have of course been reissued before but never so well compiled, annotated and illustrated as by this typically exemplary Proper Pairs package.
