Monte Iato - Gli inizi
0 - Default Title
Description
The analysis of selected stratified contexts from the proto-Archaic, Archaic, and Classical periods at Monte Iato has yielded significant insights into the development phases of occupation. This included the coexistence of indigenous and imported or regio-colonial imitation materials which allowed for a refined chronology of local pottery products. Also, a more precise dating of building features was possible. Often, pottery vessels were suspended from ceilings and walls, placed on the ground, and possibly stored in shelves. They did not only serve functional purposes but were also decorative elements in houses. For ca. 750-460/50 B.C., five key archaeological contexts were defined, and a chrono-typological sequence of local indigenous pottery was established. The stylistic and technological changes not only reflect aesthetic preferences, but also indicate storage and usage practices. Indigenous pottery production centres have not been found yet. Another topic is the relationship between decorative techniques and surface treatment, which allow for a precise dating of individual pots. The complex interaction with the spheres of the Phoenicians and Magna Graecia is underscored.
