Karl Rossmann, un allegro sedicenne, viene mandato dai genitori in America perché dimentichi una cameriera che ha messo incinta. Prima accolto con affetto poi, senza motivo, allontanato dallo zio, si unisce a due vagabondi. Viene assunto come lift in un grande albergo e anche qui senza motivo, viene poi licenziato. Torna dai due vagabondi fino a che non viene assunto dal "Grande teatro" di Oklahoma. A questo punto il romanzo, pubblicato postumo, si interrompe.
