En octubre de 1849, Gustave Flaubert y su amigo el fotógrafo Maxime Du Camp parten de París rumbo a Egipto. Du Camp viaja, cámara al hombro, con la idea de publicar lo que se convertiría en el primer libro de viajes ilustrado con fotografías. Ambos ansiaban conocer unas tierras que ya ejercían una poderosa fascinación en Europa a mediados del xix. El 15 de noviembre llegan a Alejandría e inician una travesía por el Nilo que durará un total de nueve meses, remontando el río hasta la segunda catarata, y regresando a través del Alto Egipto y Nubia.Las cartas escritas por Flaubert durante esos meses describiendo los detalles del viaje —inéditas hasta hoy en castellano— constituyen un testimonio excepcional y un documento histórico y literario del mayor interés. Como relato de viajes, resultan inigualables: a su interés testimonial respecto a uno de los escritores más sobresalientes del xix unen su excepcional calidad literaria y su amenidad, y nos trasladan al Nilo milenario en toda su grandeza, su belleza y su serenidad de la mano, nada menos, que de Gustave Flaubert.
