Très jeune, Catherine Labouré rêve de devenir religieuse mais son père s'y oppose. Adolescente, elle rejoint deux de ses frères à Paris qui l'encouragent à servir Dieu. En avril 1830, elle entre chez les Filles de la Charité, où elle s'occupe des enfants qui travaillent à l'usine, des malades et des vieillards indigents.
