Description
Sergei Rachmaninoffs All-Night Vigil (also known as Vespers or The Great Evening and Morning Praise) is his last contribution to Russian Orthodox church music. The liturgical model for this work is a wor service which occurs the evening before sacred holidays and consists of a succession of prayers, readings and chants. In this composition for a cappella choir from 1915 Rachmaninoff was able to create a unity between the monophonic chants of the Orthodox Church and the musical ideas of the late romantic era. With its warm, majestic sound the work is considered a real showpiece for big choirs. Its profound emotional depth emerges prominently in this excellent recording by the WDR Radio Choir under Nicolas Fink..
