Description
Contains two films: THINGS TO COME: In 1940 war hits Everytown and, with its people unprepared, lasts thirty years. A new order, named 'Wings Over the World', emerges from the ruins, led by John Cabal (Raymond Massey). By 2036, Cabal's grandson Oswald continues his quest towards a society ruled by technology, but the artistic community stage a mass revolt. Based on HG Wells's speculative meditation on the price of progress, this 1936 English science-fiction epic shows the painterly touch of director William Cameron Menzies, an American whose career in art direction and production design, as well as uncredited directorial work, attached him to such visual triumphs as Gone with the Wind, Alexander Korda's sumptuous 1940 Thief of Baghdad, and Menzies's better-known SF achievement as director, the original Invaders from Mars. Things to Come traces a generational saga that begins, presciently, with a global war that outlives its own political purpose, unravelling society to a Balkanised world of isolated communities. In the wake of a subsequent, devastating plague, a new technocracy arises, evolving toward Menzies's striking vision of vast, subterranean cities, rendered in matte paintings building on then-contemporaneous art-deco "streamlined" aesthetics. JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF TIME: Gruff, hard nosed boss Stanton takes over a scientific research company after the death of his benevolent father. Three scientists, who are very close to a breakthrough in time travel, are told by Stanton they must have results in 24 hours or face a funding cut off. Trying to push their equipment past its sage operating limit, they travel into the far future and distant past, with Stanton along as an accidental participant.
