Pubblicato sul numero 2 della rivista "Orpheu" nel giugno del 1915, "Ode marittima" è un poemetto tanto profondamente legato all'eteronimo Alvaro de Campos quanto apparentemente distante dal suo creatore Fernando Pessoa. Per Pessoa infatti -così come per l'altro suo eteronimo Bernardo Soares, al quale si deve il celebre "Libro dell'inquietudine" -, guardare il Tago, il mare, l'oceano, è solitamente fonte di tristezza, di solitudine, di "saudade", di glorie passate, di - appunto - "desassosego" ('inquietudine'). Per Pessoa-Alvaro de Campos, invece, quella stessa visione diviene la molla scatenante di uno straordinario delirio che si trasforma in un'autentica epopea del mare e degli uomini che, in diverso modo e con scopi ben differenti, hanno solcato le acque del mondo intero.
