Description
The publication of this posthumous work by Fernando Pessoa shows us a text that, unlike the majority of his other unpublished works, was complete, typewritten and ready for publication at the time of his death. It is a guide of Lisbon, that fundamental universe of Pessoa which he called home. Written in English, it is deliberately presented as a tourist guide, void of rhetoric. It constitutes an itinerary of all the important heritage landmarks of the city, be they architectural, artistic, intellectual, or purely leisurely ones. Visiting Lisbon guided by the great poet is a source of constant pleasure. In spite of all the years that have gone by and of the urban changes that took place, we can still enjoy strolling through the melancholic streets of the white city and recognizing the places that he speaks of. This guide, probably written in 1925, was part of a wider project conceived by Pessoa, comprising works intended to dignify Portugal, which he believed had lost its standing in Europe. In this particular case, Pessoa’s goal was to dignify the country’s capital city. Foreword by Teresa Rita Lopes, an eminent expert on Fernando Pessoa, the text is now published as a book.
