Un giovane impiegato delle ferrovie, Remigio, rientra nella proprietà della sua famiglia per visitare il padre, in punto di morte. Da lui eredita ogni possedimento terriero, cosa che lo mette subito in conflitto con la moglie del defunto, sua matrigna, e con l'ex amante del padre. Esse hanno infatti a pretendere parte dell'eredità. Al di là di questo, Remigio si trova a dover gestire il suo podere senza avere la fermezza e le capacità di suo padre. I contadini, allora, si vendicano di quanto avevano subìto e cercano di sbarazzarsi del nuovo padrone. Insieme agli altri due romanzi "Con gli occhi chiusi" (1919) e "Tre croci" (1920), "Il podere" viene considerato parte della «Trilogia sull'inettitudine».
