In 1943 the State of Sao Paulo had 88 registered fishing vessels, 92 in 1944, and 111 in 1945. Practically all of these vessels are built of wood and driven by motor. It is estimated that this motorized fleet brings in more than 90 per cent of the total catch of fish.

Horsepower of the vessels varies from 10 to 70, averaging about 28, and length is a minimum of 7 meters and a maximum of 15, averaging about Dead weight runs from 3 to 50 metric tons, averaging about 10, and cargo capacity varies from 1 to 27 tons, averaging about 6. These boats carry a crew of from 2.to 10 men.
