La genesi del racconto di Tristano e Isotta non è ancora del tutto delineata ma gli studiosi per lo più concordano nel considerare Tristano un eroe di origine pitta (verrebbe dunque dal Nord della Scozia, VIII secolo) che diversi popoli celti hanno contribuito a caratterizzare nel corso del tempo. Le più antiche versioni letterarie conservate, in versi e in francese antico, risalgono però all'ultimo terzo del XII secolo.
