This volume is the sixth volume of the author's collected essays published by the Phaidon Press. It includes most of the author's papers dealing with the problems they first raised in "Art and Illusion: A Study in the Psychology of Pictorial Representation". The book is based on the author's Mellon Lectures of 1956 and it was published in 1960. Since then, the author has had a good deal of time to have second thoughts and make revisions, some of which were mentioned in successive Prefaces to the English editions of 1967, 1971 and 1977. It became clear that not only students of arts and letters but also practising scientists wanted clarifications and recapitulations, which belied the supposition that the intellectual world is split into two cultures that don't communicate with one another! Therefore the author has (in this edition) spent more time looking at visual tools like photography, diagrams and maps. The author has organised the book into the order in which the further studies were written, and therefore the book opens with a lecture on 'Visual Discovery Through Art' given at the University of Texas because here he looked at the whole subject from a new vantage-point.
