Una serie bizarra e curiosa di eventi porta Johann Friedrich Struensee, giovane medico tedesco, idealista, impregnato di idee illuministe, ad accettare l'incarico di medico personale, e poi di Primo Ministro, del re di Danimarca Cristiano VII. E' il 1768: per quattro anni la Danimarca conosce una rivoluzione che anticipa, senza terrore, le conquiste della rivoluzione francese.
