In the preceding five volumes the memoirs occupied an average of more than eleven pages each. The income of the fund is not sufficient to continue the publication of such ex tended memoirs, and the Society has directed that in this and the succeeding volumes much briefer sketches shall be printed. It has not been possible to apply this rule rigidly, because certain memoirs in this volume were prepared years since, with the understanding that they were to be printed in full. Some of these longer sketches, however, have been condensed by consent of their authors.
