Pubblicato a puntate sul settimanale "Le Voltaire" tra il 1879 e il 1880, e poi edito subito in volume, Nanà rimane, con ogni probabilità, il libro che contiene pagine tra le più alte e riuscite del grande narratore francese (come quelle del teatro delle Variétés o delle corse di cavalli a Longchamps), dimostrandone la capacità di eccellere nella creazione di gruppi umani e sociali, con uno sguardo acutissimo e sorprendentemente moderno.
