Aw-Arrh!: Experiences in the Women's Land Army

0 - Default Title
Description
While working in a department store during the Second World War, a chance meeting led the author to join the Women's Land Army, despite comments that she didn't look strong enough.

Following the seasons and patterns of farming in those days, she recalls with much humour her first year of life on a farm. Having to contend with the farm workers' dialect as well as trying to milk temperamental cows, and with work in the cowsheds and fields bringing aching muscles and blisters, there were times when she thought she would never make it.

There were embarrassing moments, too, as she had to find out the facts of life (cow-wise!) and bath in Jeyes Fluid for a skin complaint; but also funny incidents when some calves chewed someone's washing and a cow supposedly ate her pixie hat.

In compensation she was able to have some time off which she enjoyed with other Land Army friends. Also, as she gradually became used to it all, she found satisfaction in the work and an appreciation of nature.

Although, after this spell in the Women's Land Army, Ellen moved on, she continued to work on farms for several years before eventually marrying a farmer.
