Description
These five studies on the myth of the quarrel for the possession of the beautiful Helena which reflects wars of a distant era, therefore the quarrels for the "possession" of territories (we refer to the research of the Hellenists) analyze it in 5 dramas of the 17th century: of Isaac de BenseradeThe death of Achilles and the dispute over his weapons, by Jean Racine Andromaque and Iphigenia, by Thomas Corneille The death of Achilles, and by an anonymous author Homer's Iliad in burlesque verses. The private interests of kings dominate, who fall in love with the wives and daughters of their former adversaries and want to stop, start again or continue the hostilities between their people without thinking of the victims of their loves whom they condemn to a beautiful death in the prime of life. The cynicism of the comparison of the fire of Troy to the fire of love in the famous verse "Burned with more fires than I kindled" is accused. The honor of the victory over Troy will be "the eternal maintenance of centuries to come", Agamemnon however initially opposes the sacrifice of Iphigenia, she will not die, he cannot consent to it. An anonymous author parodies the Iliad, "Master Homer, very well advised in war".
